The Defilers - Metal Mountains CD (Dry Run)
No-nonsense uptempo Stoner rock'n'roll from Louiseville, Kentucky.
This outfit sounds like more fun than a bag of spider monkies; amped-to-max
wall of sludge geetars mixed with a lets-throw-a-punkrock-party-and-get-drunk-and-naked.
Early loose Mudhoney jammin' with Sabbath in Blue Cheer's backyard,
you get the picture. From full frontal rage to slow hardrock grooves,
"Metal Mountains" is a very varied album that I won't get
tired of anytime soon. For those about to rock...get this record,
NOW!

"Metal Mountains," the Defilers
He can blame only himself, but it's still somewhat
tragic that an entire generation of Americans will, when they think
of Ozzy Osbourne, see a doddering old fool cursing the dog sh-- on
the imported rugs in his Beverly Hills palace.
Someone will tell them about Black Sabbath,
but it will probably be too late. Best to start in the present and
work your way backward, and an excellent first step would be "Metal
Mountains," specifically the third song of this Louisville quartet's
second release.
"7 Thunders" reeks of the guttural
guitars and bark-at-the-moon vocals that helped Sabbath pioneer heavy
metal. The dingy riffs and darkened howls continue throughout "Metal
Mountains," which also shows touches of Clutch and Queens of
the Stone Age, two other bands that borrowed heavily from early Ozzy.
But the Defilers don't punch out after dropping
a few sledgehammer chords. Harmonized choruses on the rowdy opener
"Come On" show innovation beyond the classic Black Sabbath
model, while "Please Ease Me" proves the Defilers owe as
much to AC/DC as they do to Sharon Osbourne's husband.
Regretably, for all the darkness and calculated
sludge, the production value of "Metal Mountains" is a bit
too muddy, casting further shadows on music that is black enough on
its own.

THE DEFILERS
Metal Mountains
________________________________________________________
A bit of a missed opportunity here. See, there’s an unholy wallop
of skull-cracking black thunder on this record, only it’s buried
under a seabed of muck and hiss. The under-produced sound might actually
be on purpose, I dunno, but I just wish the Defilers woulda gone top-shelf
on the knob-twiddling, because what a motherfuckin’ beast this
could be. As it is, “Metal Mountains” is still pretty
ferocious; it’s just that it’s like a snapping Doberman
behind a chainlink fence. It really WANTS to do some damage to your
face, but it can’t. Anyway, enough about the sound, let’s
talk about the SOUND. These Defilers (not to be confused with the
‘billy band or the street punk band or any actual defilers out
there) are from Kentucky, and they play a hoary blend of 70’s
fried stoner-doom and mayhem-baiting glam-dirge. The only other bands
they bring to mind are the Cringe and the PB Army, and neither of
them sound anything alike, so prepare yourself for a uniquely evil
twist on rock n’ roll here. The vocalist sounds like a half-strangled
Danzig, the guitar player is clearly insane, the rhythm section sounds
like stone-cold killers, and the aptly named “Metal Mountains”
is a pill-crazy war on everything that tortures and torments with
desperately heavy rock n’ roll. Dig “Come On”, “Slave”
or “Dog Bite” for three prime examples. Like I said, it’s
got it’s flaws, but keep your eye on the Defilers. Give these
freaks a budget and they’ll make an apocalyptic masterpiece,
believe it. ________________________________________________________

The Defilers
(Dry Run)
Stoner Rock
Sweet Jesus. This band is more than heavy. Crushing.
No, devastating. This record will knock the wind out of you before
it punches you in the gut. My arms are so tense I can hardly type
as it fills my headphones with musical gore. This band is gross and
disgusting in the vein of the Stooges — I envision plenty of
broken glass, shredded speakers and bleeding eardrums at Defilers
shows. They’ve got the MC5 “I wanna see a sea of hands”
raw-nerve energy element in tact, and a heavy (no pun intended) reverence
for blues-infused rock ’n’ roll, evidenced on tunes like
“Travel Bottle”; that is, before it terrorizes your nerves
the way the Melvins do — too slow and mellow for comfort. It
must be something akin to the head-in-the-gallows anticipation of
death: You can’t be serene, no matter how beautiful the day,
because you know you’re about to be overwhelmed.
Although you may not know it from the city’s musical rep, there’s
a good stoner rock contingent here. File this next to ARCH, the Glasspack
and all its side projects. Not to be missed. —Stephen George

The Defilers-Metal Mountains CD
DryRun
Finally the Defilers have sent me their
follow up to their 2003 self titled CD and I must say that the four
guys from Louisville, Kentucky must have been out of their mind while
they´ve recorded "Metal Mountains". The music is still
fuzzed out and full of energy, but they´ve brought in more of
that "plug in and freak out" feeling...yes, this recording
brings over a pretty good live feeling, but also a damn nice 70´s
MC5 and Blue Cheer vibe. Folks who like long jams will worship this
release, but don´t be afraid, the jams won´t get boring...these
guys are good musicians...believe me... The vocals are still crazy
and full emotion...a little bit like a mix out of early Ozzy and Rob
Tyner (MC5)..."Metal Mountains" goes straight forward and
you can hear that The Defilers have a shitload of fun playing their
music...trippin´ and pure with a lot of originality...BURN 1.

The
DEFILERS - Self Titled
I
don´t know what they put in the coffee in Louisville, Kentucky,
cause after The Glasspack
and their fuzzed out way to celebrate the Rock the next crazy band
from Louisville...these
guys sound like a Blue Cheer and MC5 on f**ing Speed and Crack.
The music of The Defilers is also really really fuzzed out. The vocals
are punky and
sometimes crazy as hell, BUT really well done. I also love the psychedelic
moments
on this CD...sometimes a bit like Nebula just with more power.
The rhythm section is strong in this band (doesn´t that sound
like f**ing Star Wars)...hahaha...
I highly recommend The Defilers.

The DEFILERS - Self Titled
Review by: Scrit (StonerRock.com)
Dryrun Records, 2003
Available now
OK.
With song titles like “Fucko Destructo,” “Shitstorm,”
and the image of a kneeling little girl about to let loose a volley
of 50-calibre machine gun fire adorning the inside cover jacket, you’re
expecting quite a bang from The Defilers self-titled EP. We begin
with “Balls,” a nasty bass line that escalates quickly
into a punk-fueled, lo-fi assault that I can’t directly compare
to anything I listen to. It is a bang. The music is frantic, a bit
surfy, very demo-y, and full of screaming. The vocals are a bit reminiscent
of Nick Oliveri’s Mondo Generator stuff. True to punk fashion,
most cuts are very short, clocking in at roughly two minutes or less.
It’s
hard to know who to direct to these guys. It’s definitely way-below-the-radar,
culty recordings. Music suitable for going out on a killing spree
in a Tarantino-action-styled movie sequence. But they are skilled
and good what they do, though I don’t know exactly what that
is. That’s good though, no? A lot of folks hate “labels”
or the lesser stigmatized “descriptives.” So for that,
I definitely can’t say, “Oh these guys are hopelessly
imitating or outright ripping off ‘so-and-so.’”
“Fire
Down Below” has this QOTSA-type harmony subversively slithering
it’s way under the chorus and is perhaps the standout track
for me on this quick 18-minute EP. “Shitstorm,” the closing
song, takes its time much more than the rest of the album. Reminding
me heavily, and this is a huge compliment, of Mammoth Volume’s
more aggressive riffage. This is the most desert-y tune The Defilers
serve up, so I’d have to say this one is my favorite.
You’re
not going to find out much about them online. They are also not to
be confused with the other The Defilers, a rockabilly-punk outfit
from South Carolina. Their website, thedefilers.net, is not yet up
and running, so little is known to us folks about who they are. But
they come from Louisville, Kentucky, and have earned a strong local
following, their pedigree playing no small part (comprised of members
of Without Further Ado, Wino, and Front Porch Campaign).

MAIL:
Hey
assholes.
We registered the name the Defilers online and no one had it at the
time.We were going to use the same logo(from the movie),too.I was
surprised to find a scooter club of the same name a few months back, but
I let that go.
Don't make us be known as the Detroit Defilers, because we had the
name FIRST!Were not a stoner rock band either-we're a streetpunk/Oi!
band!
p.s.If you plan on playing at the Elbow Room in Ypsilanti which is
a big stoner rock venue, don't expect a warm welcome.
Cheers,
Gabe (Detroit Defilers)
